Regarding data showing meager domestic auto sales in 4M26, He Xiaopeng, Chairman and CEO of XPENG-W (09868.HK), said it is difficult to gauge market trends for 2H26, as some industry data reflect deliveries while others represent wholesale figures, which can easily cause confusion.

He noted that domestic challenges in 2H will not be mild, but overseas growth potential is tremendous. However, if the domestic market continues to sell cars under the old model, it will lapse into a predicament similar to the smartphone industry, with declining consumers willingness to replace vehicles.

The auto industry needs to undergo major transformation by improving size, configuration, quality and design, he opined. The real leap forward will be the realization of L4 autonomous driving, increasing mileage coverage from 50% to over 90%, allowing users to avoid frequently touching the steering wheel. The Chairman believes that the day will arrive soon.

He estimated that L4 is more likely to be commercialized overseas first rather than in China. Rapid adoption is unlikely in the next one to two years, but it will not take a decade. Physical AI is expected to achieve breakthroughs first in robotics, which will in turn drive the implementation of autonomous driving.
