Since the beginning of the year, the stock prices of regional banks in Hong Kong have been volatile with divergence, CICC said in a research report. In terms of stock performance, local Hong Kong banks outperformed as a whole, while international banks saw a notable pullback. Owing to the improved interest rate environment since the beginning of the year, local favorable factors in Hong Kong have sprouted. CICC attributed this to some investors betting on a reversal of Hong Kong's economic and real estate cycles, leading to a marked outperformance of local Hong Kong banks from late January to early February. Additionally, geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have prompted international banks, which have a high reliance on international business and more exposure to the Middle East, to underperform. CICC maintained its target price and earnings forecasts for regional banks in Hong Kong, viewing that geopolitical conflicts reversing the overall economic environment is a low-probability event, and the sustainability of Hong Kong's economic recovery needs observation. The broker recommended Hong Kong international banks with prominent profitability, a focus on shareholder returns, excellent asset quality, and high transparency in financial statements.
