TENCENT (00700.HK) is secretly developing an AI agent for its WeChat application, according to The Information, citing four people with the knowledge of the matter.

The project is classified as a company priority confidential plan, with its initiation tracing back to at least the first half of last year.

Tencent plans to start grey-box testing in the middle of this year and launch to all users in the third quarter, sources divulged. If the functionality is not yet mature, the launch schedule may still be adjusted.

Once implemented, the AI agent will integrate with millions of mini-programs within the WeChat platform, covering various services such as ride-hailing and food delivery, allowing 1.4 billion monthly active users (MAUs) to autonomously complete tasks.

This move will maximize expansion of the application scenarios of AI agents domestically and directly challenge the established first-mover advantages of BABA-W (09988.HK) and ByteDance in this field.
