Hong Kong Customs detected a precious metals smuggling case, seizing 168 kilograms of gold and 285 kilograms of silver, with a market value of approx. $230 million, marking the largest case on record. Customs is making every effort to trace the identities of the sender and recipient, and does not rule out the possibility of arrest operations later.

On Monday (2nd), customs officers searched two batches of cargo destined for Japan via air freight. The suspected gold foil and suspected silver foil were seized from goods reportedly containing ultraviolet cleaning machines and multi-purpose cleaning machines.

It is estimated that the law-breakers attempted to evade approx. $23 million import taxes on precious metals into Japan.
