Lawmakers and government officials from Japan's ruling coalition plan to impose a new tax on electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) based on a draft amendment to the tax law, reported Nikkei. This tax will apply to non-commercial EVs and PHEVs and will take effect in May 2028. The revenue from this tax will be used for road maintenance.
