Despite being placed on the U.S. Entity List, China's leading NAND flash memory chip maker YMTC is experiencing a spike in domestic demand propelled by the trend of localization and the AI boom, having prompted the initiation of construction for its third factory, according to Nikkei Asia.

YMTC has begun construction of its third plant in Wuhan, with plans to commence operations in 2027, the report, citing three informed sources, revealed. Meanwhile, the company is accelerating the capacity layout of its second plant.

YMTC is considering tapping into the DRAM chip sector, which is a fundamental component of HBM widely used in AI data centers, two sources told Nikkei Asia. Both DRAM and NAND flash memory are critical components for data centers, computers, smartphones, and other electronic devices.

NAND production has long been dominated by a few suppliers, including Samsung Electronics (005930.KS), Kioxia (285A.JP), SanDisk (SNDK.US), SK Hynix (000660.KS), Micron (MU.US), and Solidigm.
