The European Commission is looking at a plan to mandate member states to gradually phase out equipment from Huawei and ZTE (00763.HK) to reduce potential national security risks. Henna Virkkunen, Vice President of the European Commission, is considering transforming the Commission's non-binding recommendations from 2020 regarding high-risk suppliers into legally binding regulations, requiring member states to align their telecom network construction with EU security guidelines, people familiar with the matter revealed. At this juncture, countries retain the leading authority in telecom infrastructure decision-making; but if the new proposal is passed, it will force EU countries to uniformly implement related security standards.
