Toshiba is weighing layoffs of 5,000 employees in Japan, equivalent to about 7% of its total workforce, in order to accelerate group reorganization, Nikkei reported.

The layoffs will primarily involve the back-office departments at the headquarters, and the group also hopes to reduce the number of employees through a voluntary retirement program, sources divulged.

Toshiba expects to incur a loss of JPY100 billion (USD646 million) in connection with the layoffs, including special additional retirement benefits and transfer services.
