<H Shrs>HSI Closes Down 224 Pts in Half-Day Trading; ZIJIN MINING, JIANGXI COPPER Hit New Highs; CHINA UNICOM Slips for 6 Straight Days

The Hong Kong bourse closed early today (31st) on New Year's Eve with half-day trading. The HSI opened down 53 points and once sank 300 points to a bottom of 25,554. It eventually closed 224 points or nearly 0.9% lower at 25,630. The HSCEI fell 77 points or nearly 0.9%, closing at 8,913. The HSTECH declined 62 points or 1.1% to close at 5,515. The market turnover amounted to HKD119.666 billion. The HSI recorded a slip of 228 points or 0.9% for the entire December and a nosedive of 1,225 points or 4.6% for the whole quarter. For the entire year of 2025, however, it logged a rise of 5,570 points or 27.8%, representing its best performance in eight years. Some resource stocks were favored despite the market rout. ZIJIN MINING (02899.HK) once soared to a historical high of HKD36.98 during the trading session and managed to close the day up 0.8% at HKD35.66, with a turnover of HKD2.345 billion. It has issued a positive profit alert expecting a full-year profit increase of around 59-62% for 2025. JIANGXI COPPER (00358.HK) also rose 9.6% during trading at one point to a fresh record of HKD44.62. It closed 5.4% higher at HKD42.88, with a turnover of HKD1.287 billion. MMG (01208.HK) swelled 1.7%. CHUANGXIN IND (02788.HK), a newly listed alumina and electrolytic aluminum manufacturer, spiked 7.5%. Heavyweight tech stocks were weak across the board. NTES-S (09999.HK), TRIP.COM-S (09961.HK), NEW ORIENTAL-S (09901.HK), JD-SW (09618.HK), BABA-W (09988.HK), and MEITUAN-W (03690.HK) eroded nearly 1-3.2%. KUAISHOU-W (01024.HK) edged down 0.9%. XIAOMI-W (01810.HK) and TENCENT (00700.HK) dipped nearly 0.2%. BIDU-SW (09888.HK) rallied 1.4% to close at HKD131.5, the best performer among blue chips. The major Chinese telecoms trended south. CHINA MOBILE (00941.HK) and CHINA TELECOM (00728.HK) closed 0.5-0.7% lower. CHINA UNICOM (00762.HK) slid for six consecutive days, closing down 1.4% at HKD7.78, marking a ten-month low.
