Senior US officials met with major AI companies to hold preliminary discussions on the possibility of the government acquiring partial equity stakes in these firms, foreign media reported.

The focus of the discussions is on allowing these companies to voluntarily transfer shares to the government. The US government may use potential investment returns for public purposes, such as distributing dividends to all American households.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman purportedly first proposed the idea to US President Donald Trump last year and has in recent weeks renewed discussions with senior government officials, positioning it as a broader approach to sharing the economic benefits of AI with the public.
