Reuters, citing documents, reported that Samsung plans to invest about USD1.5 billion in Vietnam to build a semiconductor testing plant, in a bid to ease the global shortage of memory chips. The documents show that construction of the new plant has begun in an industrial park about 60 kilometers north of Hanoi, and operations are expected to commence in November next year. The facility will focus on producing traditional chips. Although mature memory chips are less critical to the AI supply chain than AI chips, mature memory chips are also facing severe shortages as major manufacturers allocate more capacity to AI chip production. The documents added that if the project generates profits, Samsung plans to invest up to about USD2.5 billion more to build a second plant.
