Shanghai’s cultural and tourism market developed swimmingly during the 2025 May Day holiday, with no major safety incidents reported, the Shanghai Securities News cited the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture and Tourism.

Shanghai Tourism Big Data monitoring showed the city welcomed 16.5006 million visitors, up 1.61% YoY. Total tourism transaction value, covering dining, accommodation, transport, sightseeing, shopping, and entertainment, whopped RMB20.11 billion, marking a 10.2% YoY hike.

The city’s hotel occupancy rate averaged 73%, up 6.5 ppts YoY, with daily occupancy exceeding 80% for three consecutive days (May 2-4), hitting historical highs. Data from major travel booking platforms like TRIP.COM-S (09961.HK)  +12.200 (+2.587%)    Short selling $263.49M; Ratio 31.126%   , Qunar, and TONGCHENGTRAVEL (00780.HK)  +0.350 (+1.699%)    Short selling $74.28M; Ratio 18.233%   , covering over 5,000 accommodation units in Shanghai, showed hotel average occupancy gained over 20% and sales revenue grew over 15% during the holiday.

According to CCTV's Beijing Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism, Beijing's tourism arrivals and spending realized double growth during the period, with the city receiving 17.908 million tourists, notching a YoY rise of 5.6%, and spending RMB20.98 billion, a YoY increase of 6.9%. Among them, the city received 104,000 inbound tourists, up 42.4% YoY, and realized inbound tourism spending of RMB1.13 billion, up 48% YoY.
