On Wednesday (9th), the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (OCMFA) of the PRC in HKSAR sent a letter to the South China Morning Post regarding the U.S.’s imposition of severely unreasonable tariffs on China, articulating China’s solemn stance. The letter stated that, despite widespread international opposition, the U.S. imposed so-called “reciprocal tariffs” on all trading partners under absurd pretexts. This represents classic unilateralism, protectionism and economic coercion, severely infringing on the legitimate rights of nations, undermining the rules-based multilateral trading system, and disrupting the global economic order.Related NewsCentral Parity of USD/ RMB Adds 25 bps to 7.1938The letter bluntly criticized the U.S. for brazenly imposing tariffs as high as 104% on China, calling it blatant intimidation and extortion, which China will never accept. It accused the U.S. of not knowing how to begin, lacking understanding of how to coexist with China or engage properly with other nations, and instead being obsessed with bullying and extorting the world. If the U.S. genuinely seeks dialogue with China on tariffs, it should immediately correct its erroneous actions and adopt an attitude of equality, respect and mutual benefit, the letter furthered. Should the U.S. persist in its unilateral approach, China will undoubtedly fight till the end.In its concluding remarks, the letter noted that the unreasonable U.S. tariffs also apply to Hong Kong. The office emphasized Hong Kong’s unique advantage of “being backed by the motherland and connected to the world”, expressing adamant confidence that Hong Kong has the capability, confidence and foundation to effectively respond, with the unwavering support of the central government and the Chinese people.
