Reuters analyzed the tariff codes involved in the US federal register notice and found that US President Donald Trump's 25% tariff on auto and auto parts covers nearly US$600 billion worth of goods, while all imports of computers, including laptops, which the US imported last year in a related category worth US$138.5 billion.

The US will introduce a 25% tariff on auto imports on Thursday (3rd) local time, and the 25% tariff on auto parts will be implemented from 3 May.

The US updated the tariff proclamation of nearly 150 tariff categories last week, according to reports. The list includes tariff codes for engines, transmissions, lithium-ion batteries and other major components, as well as cheaper parts like tires, shock absorbers, spark plug wires and brake hoses. A 4-digit tariff code covering all computers is also included.
