Huawei's latest foldable laptop, the Matebook Fold | Ultimate Design, is equipped with the Kirin X90 chip, which is made based on the old 7nm (N+2) chip that SMIC (00981.HK) launched in August 2023, busting the rumor that SMIC's chip has made a breakthrough to 5nm, reflecting the fact that US controls on the export of advanced technologies, such as chip equipment, have been effective in hindering China's chip progress, Foreign media quoted TechInsights' survey as saying.

Huawei's 7nm chips are several generations behind those used by companies like Apple (AAPL.US), Qualcomm (QCOM.US) and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD.US), the report added.

As foundries such as TSMC (TSM.US) and Intel (INTC.US) prepared to roll out 2nm process technology in the next 12-24 months, it means China is still at least three generations behind the world's most advanced semiconductors.
