HSI Closes Down 18 pts as MEITUAN-W Gains 2%+; NEV Makers Wane

This morning (2nd), the HSI opened down 48 pts before losses widened to as much as 321 pts, nearly testing the 25,000 level. With the decline later narrowed, the index closed at 25,311, down 18 pts or 0.07%. Full-day turnover amounted to HKD216.691 billion. The HSCEI closed at 8,450, down 12 pts or 0.15%. The HSTECH closed at 4,517, down 33 pts or 0.74%.

Among active heavyweight stocks, MEITUAN-W (03690.HK) bucked the market trend and jumped up 2.74%. TENCENT (00700.HK) and BABA-W (09988.HK) dipped less than 1%. KUAISHOU-W (01024.HK) slid 2.89%. XIAOMI-W (01810.HK) added 1.81% ahead of its autumn flagship product launch event next Monday.

Among blue chips, CATL (03750.HK) slumped 4.65%, while BYD ELECTRONIC (00285.HK) cratered 3.8%. LONGFOR GROUP (00960.HK) shrank 4.37%. CHINA OVERSEAS (00688.HK) rallied 4.55%, making it the best-performing blue chip of the day. HSBC HOLDINGS (00005.HK) gained 1.25%.

Several NEV makers unveiled August sales figures. LEAPMOTOR (09863.HK) reported global deliveries of more than 100,000 units again in August and was upgraded to Buy by UBS, with its shares closing up 1.42%. CLSA said GEELY AUTO (00175.HK) may face greater pricing pressure, sending the stock down 2.9%. BYD COMPANY (01211.HK) fell off 3.4%, LI AUTO-W (02015.HK) dropped 2.55%, XPENG-W (09868.HK) declined 2.34%, while NIO-SW (09866.HK) slipped 3.35% after Citi cut its TP following earnings results.
