HSI Dips 17 pts for Day; Z.AI Leaps ~10%; CN Developers Blown by New Policy

This morning (31st), the HSI opened down 164 pts and once slid 294 pts in early trading to a trough of 25,290 before narrowing losses. The index closed at 25,566, down 17 pts or 0.07%, while full-day turnover increased to HKD314.819 billion. The HSCEI ended at 8,513, up 22 pts or 0.27%. The HSTECH concluded at 4,619, up 14 pts or 0.07%.

Z.AI (02513.HK), which is set to announce results and will be included in the MSCI China Index after market close today (31st), rebounded sharply in the afternoon and surged 9.63%. MINIMAX-W (00100.HK) also rallied 16.18%. GCL TECH (03800.HK), which will be removed from the MSCI China Index, plunged 11.39% after the company reported its interim loss widened to RMB2.081 billion. Other deleted constituents including HESAI-W (02525.HK), KINGDEE INT'L (00268.HK) and PONY-W (02026.HK) nosedived more than 3% to over 6%.

Chinese property developers opened higher before turning lower during the day after mainland authorities announced the cancellation of the long-standing pre-sale mechanism for commercial housing and imposed stricter supervision and custody over pre-sale funds for existing projects. The industry generally believes there will be short-term pain. CHINA RES LAND (01109.HK) plunged 9.4%, making it the worst-performing blue chip of the day after its interim net profit declined 17.2%. CHINA VANKE (02202.HK) fell off 3.61% after Morgan Stanley said the company's share price could decline over the next 30 days as the new policy may reduce contracted sales due to slower asset turnover. LONGFOR GROUP (00960.HK) fell 7.07%; CHINA OVERSEAS (00688.HK) dropped 9.33%; SUNAC (01918.HK) sank 10.37%; CHINA JINMAO (00817.HK) tumbled 15.92%; and C&D INTL GROUP (01908.HK) slid 16.43% after Citi said the new policy could hurt its high asset-turnover model.

Chinese banks continued to announce results. JPMorgan said the 2Q26 results of state-owned mainland banks beat market expectations, and upgraded PSBC (01658.HK) to Overweight. The stock closed up 6.96%. BANK OF CHINA (03988.HK) and CCB (00939.HK) were also JPMorgan's top picks, with both stocks hitting record highs after results, soaring 5.73% and 3.94% respectively. ICBC (01398.HK) rallied 1.68%, while ABC (01288.HK) mounted 1.93%.
