HSI Opens Up 67 Pts; NEW ORIENTAL-S Swells 14%+ Post-results; XL2CSOPSMSN Slumps 8%

US President Donald Trump threatened to strike Iran heavily, sending international oil prices sharply higher. Together with the Fed's decision to keep interest rates unchanged, the market worried that policymakers may be falling behind the curve in tackling inflation. US equities closed lower overnight, with the DJIA plunging more than 1,100 points, and the Nasdaq and S&P 500 sinking 1.7% and 1.5%, respectively.

This morning (30th), the HSI opened at 25,875, up 67 points or 0.26%; the HSTECH opened at 4,885, up 21 points or 0.43%; and the HSCEI opened at 8,674, up 50 points or 0.59%.

Major techs headed north broadly. MEITUAN-W (03690.HK) opened up 2.06%; JD-SW (9618.HK) added 1.74%; and XIAOMI-W (01810.HK) gained 1.63% at the open. BABA-W (09988.HK), KUAISHOU-W (01024.HK) and BIDU-SW (09888.HK) lifted less than 1%. TENCENT (00700.HK) opened flat.

Among blue chips, NEW ORIENTAL-S (09901.HK) opened 14.68% higher after the company logged a 27.8% hike in profit for the previous fiscal year. BUD APAC (01876.HK) inched up 0.87% at the open after reporting more than 15% growth in interim profit. LENOVO GROUP (00992.HK) dipped 0.35%, while HSBC HOLDINGS (00005.HK) lost 1.52%.

Samsung Electronics' 2Q operating profit surged more than 18 times and beat expectations, with its shares in South Korea soaring more than 3%. In Hong Kong, XL2CSOPSMSN (07747.HK) opened down 8.02%, while XL2CSOPHYNIX (07709.HK) tumbled 5.87%.

ZJ INNOLIGHT (03308.HK) closed at HKD969.5 in gray market trading yesterday, 1.1% below its listing price. On its trading debut today, the stock opened at HKD971, down 0.9% from the listing price of HKD980, with turnover reaching 3.6438 million shares in early trading.
