HSI Slips 544 pts at Midday as BABA-W Plunges ~10%, SMIC Dives 6%+; AI Large Model Stocks Pressured

This morning (24th), the HSI opened down 229 pts, with losses steepening thereafter. At midday, the index closed at 25,465, down 544 pts or 2.09%, with half-day turnover at HKD167.906 billion; the HSTECH settled at 4,582, down 183 pts or 3.84%; and the HSCEI concluded at 8,460, down 173 pts or 2.01%.

Among heavyweight techs, BABA-W (09988.HK) planned a placement of new shares to raise HKD80 billion. The stock closed down 9.76% at HKD111 by midday, falling below the placement price, making it the worst-performing blue chip and a major drag on the broader market. TENCENT (00700.HK) dived 3.76%; BIDU-SW (09888.HK), XIAOMI-W (01810.HK) and NTES (09999.HK) slid more than 4%; KUAISHOU-W (01024.HK) cratered 3.6% to HKD33.18, hitting a more than three-and-a-half-year low since November 2022; while MEITUAN-W (03690.HK) lost 3%.

DeepSeek adjusted its API pricing, effectively halving prices over the weekend. HK-listed AI large model stocks came under pressure, with Z.AI (02513.HK) plunging 8.41%; MINIMAX-W (00100.HK) nosediving 9.27%; and XUNCE (03317.HK) sagging 5.91%, despite the company swinging to an interim profit of RMB72.51 million.

Chip stocks were sold off. SMIC (00981.HK) plummeted 6.62%; HUA HONG GRACE (01347.HK), newly added to the HSI, tumbled 5.23%; ILUVATAR COREX (09903.HK), newly included in the HSTECH, shed 7.83%; while MONTAGE TECH (06809.HK) and GIGADEVICE (03986.HK) both collapsed more than 6%. Samsung Electronics' shareholder return plan disappointed the market, with XL2CSOPSMSN (07747.HK) crashing 18.69%; while XL2CSOPHYNIX (07709.HK) skydived 5.95%.
