The Census and Statistics Department announced that the provisional estimate of the total receipts value of the restaurant sector in 1Q26 was HKD28.4 billion, up 1.1% YoY. Over the same period, the provisional estimate of the total purchases value of restaurants was HKD9.1 billion, up 3.6% YoY.After netting out the effect of price changes over the period, the provisional estimate of restaurant receipts in volume terms for 1Q26 edged up 0.2% YoY.Analyzed by type of restaurant and compared with the same period last year, the total receipts of Chinese restaurants rose 0.9% YoY in value terms but fell 0.2% YoY in volume terms. For non-Chinese restaurants, total receipts increased 2.8% YoY in value terms and 2.1% YoY in volume terms. Total receipts of fast food shops decreased 0.6% YoY in value terms and 1.5% YoY in volume terms. For bars, total receipts fell 4% YoY in value terms and 3.9% YoY in volume terms. As for miscellaneous eating and drinking places, total receipts rose 0.5% YoY in value terms but declined 0.6% YoY in volume terms.A government spokesperson said that broadly resilient local consumption sentiment and continued growth in inbound tourism will continue to support restaurant business. The government will keep monitoring the downside risks arising from geopolitical tensions and assess their potential impact on the restaurant sector. (ha/j)
