The Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) issued a statement initiating a new trade investigation under Section 301(b) of the Trade Act of 1974 targeting 60 economies, including China, the EU, India and Mexico, to determine whether these countries have failed to curb the import of products made with forced labor.

The investigation will assess whether foreign governments have taken adequate measures to prohibit the importation of goods produced with forced labor and evaluate the impact of failing to eradicate such practices on US workers and businesses, the statement added.

The new investigation may ultimately replace certain tariff measures that the Supreme Court ruled unconstitutional last month.
