Hong Kong’s stock market softened amid struggles. The HSI opened 32 points higher but slid as much as 348 points to 26,480 in early trading before recovering. In the afternoon, it briefly climbed 148 points to peak at 26,978 but closed down 76 points, or 0.3%, at 26,752. The HSCEI edged up 6 points, or 0.1%, to 9,530, while the HSTECH dropped 42 points, or 0.7%, to 6,471. Total market turnover reached HKD386.818 billion.

HSBC HOLDINGS (00005.HK)  -0.500 (-0.481%)    Short selling $710.08M; Ratio 19.082%   proposed to privatize HANG SENG BANK (00011.HK)  +0.600 (+0.401%)    Short selling $161.78M; Ratio 6.705%   at a 30.3% premium. HSBC signaled it would pause share buybacks for the next three quarters. HSBC’s stock dived nearly 6% to HKD104, while Hang Seng Bank rocketed 25.9% to HKD149.8. Other local banks also gained, with DAHSING BANKING (02356.HK)  -0.330 (-3.195%)    Short selling $527.24K; Ratio 4.141%   and BANK OF E ASIA (00023.HK)  -0.140 (-1.095%)    Short selling $3.03M; Ratio 13.965%   soaring 4.4% and 4.7%, respectively.

AI-related stocks jumbled. Chip makers reversed earlier gains, with Chinese media reporting that SMIC’s A-share margin trading conversion rate was adjusted to zero. Telecom equipment stock ZTE (00763.HK)  +1.620 (+4.006%)    Short selling $238.03M; Ratio 5.337%   and power infrastructure company SH ELECTRIC (02727.HK)  -0.570 (-10.179%)    Short selling $257.41M; Ratio 12.679%   swelled 12.4% and 17.4%, respectively, while cable stock YOFC (06869.HK)  -1.780 (-3.795%)    Short selling $35.62M; Ratio 4.422%   shed 7.4%.
