US President Donald Trump has recently announced that the implementation of the so-called "reciprocal tariffs" will be postponed until August 1.

According to what The Wall Street Journal learned from its sources, Trump's advisors, including Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, told him beforehand that it would be possible to reach a trade agreement if more time is given.

As Trump's original deadline of July 9 approached, government officials including Bessent felt that negotiations with several trade partners like India and the EU were making progress, the report quoted sources as saying.

The report also noted that Trump had publicly considered abandoning agreements to avoid tariffs, but after hearing from Bessent that some deals were close to being finalized but needed more time, his inclination to let the tariffs take effect immediately changed.
