China's passenger vehicle (PV) industry inventory stood at 3.45 million units at the end of May, 2025, down 50,000 units MoM but up 160,000 units YoY, resulting in persistently high inventory levels, said Cui Dongshu, Secretary General of the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

Current policy initiatives have made manufacturers optimistic. Robust production for trade-in programs and relatively aggressive wholesale shipments pushed industry inventory to a near two-year high, Cui added.

As sales gradually enter the seasonal lull from June to August, Cui estimated sales volumes to decline over the next three months. Based on the inventory at the end of May and projected future sales, the current inventory is estimated to last about 54 days. Compared to 54/ 51 days in the same period of 2023/ 24, the overall inventory pressure in May this year has slightly increased.
