Hong Kong's latest unemployment rate rose to 3.5%. Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Chris Sun, said that the current unemployment rate was similar to the average over the past 20 years. Currently, through the Enhanced Supplementary Labour Scheme, there are approximately 25,000 foreign workers in Hong Kong, accounting for less than 1% of the total labor force, and having a very minimal impact on the overall workforce, including the unemployment rate and overall dynamics. There is significant concern about the importation of foreign labor, Sun noted. Hong Kong is now facing long-term trends, namely aging population and the labor force peak in 2018, followed by a gradual decline. To support economic development, Hong Kong needs a sufficient labor force. Therefore, the Enhanced Supplementary Labour Scheme was introduced, based on Hong Kong's long-term situation, with the main principle of ensuring priority employment for local workers.
