European stocks broadly advanced in early trading today (23rd). UK retail sales climbed 0.4% YoY, topping forecast, whereas Germany's 1Q economic growth final figures beat. The data shored up German and UK stock markets by 0.4% and 0.5%, respectively. French consumer confidence unexpectedly declined last month, causing its stock market to lag behind other regional markets.

The pan-European STOXX 600 added 1.57 points or 0.3%, closing at 551.84. The UK's FTSE 100 hiked 34 points or 0.4%, closing at 8,774. France's CAC fell by less than 1 point to 7,863. Germany's DAX gained 129 points or 0.5%, closing at 24,128. Spain's IBEX 35 mounted 64 points or 0.5%, closing at 14,336. Italy's FTSE MIB lifted 26 points, closing at 40,283.
