OpenAI said on Wednesday that it will acquire io, the AI equipment startup founded by former Apple (AAPL.US)      's chief design officer Jony Ive, for approx. US$6.4 billion. The transaction is all in stock, while the value includes OpenAI's current shares in the company.

The io team focuses on developing products that inspire, empower and enable. After merging with OpenAI, io will work more closely with the research, engineering and product teams in San Francisco.
