The USD plummeted against several Asian currencies, with the CNH briefly sinking below 7.2 on May 5, prompting intervention by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA). Hong Kong stocks advanced in the morning session, with the HSI opening 71 points higher, dipping 55 points to bottom at 22,449 in early session, before rebounding to peak at 22,702, up 197 points.

By midday, the HSI gained 154 points or 0.7% to 22,658. The HSCEI added 19 points or 0.2% to 8,250. The HSTECH dipped 5 points to 5,238. Total market turnover reached HKD124.495 billion.

BABA-W (09988.HK)  -1.900 (-1.535%)    Short selling $1.12B; Ratio 10.117%   climbed 1.1% to HKD123.3. BRIGHT SMART (01428.HK)  -0.450 (-5.389%)    Short selling $54.36M; Ratio 2.917%   , which recently announced a change in controlling stake to Ant Group, swelled 19.8% with midday turnover exceeding HKD1.2 billion. AIA (01299.HK)  +1.850 (+3.083%)    Short selling $686.75M; Ratio 20.726%   leaped 3.3%, with its recent earnings report indicating a USD1.6 billion share repurchase plan, set to complete within three months, ahead of its earlier 2025 timeline.
