White House lawyers once seriously examined the legal option of firing Fed Chair Jerome Powell after US President Donald Trump repeatedly and sharply criticized Powell over the past week, but Trump later made it clear to his aides that he would not try to remove Powell, the Wall Street Journal quoted sources as saying.

Prior to Trump's decision, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick reportedly warned Trump that firing Powell could bring turmoil to the markets as well as thorny legal disputes.
