The Chief Executive in Council (CE-in-C) considered the fare hike applications of franchised bus operators today (17th) and approved a 4.3% increase for KMB, a 7.5% increase for Citybus (Urban and New Territories) and a 6.5% increase for NLB, all to be enforced from January 5, 2025.A government spokesman said that in vetting and approving the fare hike applications of franchised bus operators, the government had carried out an immense amount of gatekeeping work in a careful and rigorous manner. The decision of the CE-in-C was aimed at minimizing the impact on people's livelihood on the one hand, and taking into account the financial sustainability of franchised bus operators on the other, in the hope that operators can continue to provide the public with reliable and safe public transport services. After the implementation of the new fares, about 80% of passengers will pay no more than 50 cents per trip, and about 95% of passengers will pay no more than $1 per trip.
