CHINA UNICOM (00762)'s 1Q NP soars nearly 6x more to RMB1.01B

CHINA UNICOM (00762) announced the results for the first quarter ended 31 March 2012. First quarter income climbed 24.8% YoY to RMB61.193 bln. The net profit soared 594% to RMB1.007 bln with earnings per share 4 fen. EBITDA elevated 16.7% to RMB17.14 bln. Costs leaped 22.6% to RMB59.87 bln.

Mobile business revenue jumped 42.3% to RMB40.45 bln, of which service revenue inflated 25.6% to RMB29.26 bln. Net addition of mobile subscribers equaled 9.827 mln with total number of mobile subscribers reaching 209 mln. Average revenue per user per month (ARPU) for mobile business was RMB47.7.

3G business's service revenue amounted to RMB12.53 bln and as percentage of service revenue from the mobile business, there was a 24.4% increase from the same period of last year. The net addition of 3G subscribers reached 48.86 mln. ARPU was RMB93.9 and the average data usage per subscriber per month was 242.8MB for 3G business. Costs of handset subsidies rose 3.9% YoY to RMB1.98 bln. (k)
